Bethany Lutheran 2, Yellowjackets 1 (2 OT)
SUPERIOR, Wis.: The saying goes, "turn about is fair play." We hear it often in our formative years, and Saturday afternoon the Yellowjacket women's soccer team got a return trip to that lesson from childhood.
Earlier in the week the Yellowjackets defeated Bethany Lutheran on the Vikings' home field, 2-1 in overtime. Saturday the cleat was put on the other foot, as the Vikings rallied from a deficit to defeat the Yellowjackets 2-1 in double overtime on a blustery day at the N.B.C. Spartan Sports Complex.
Saturday's game makes four straight for the Yellowjackets were the score ended 2-1, and the Yellowjackets are 1-3 in those contests.
It looked good for the Yellowjackets early, as they owned the edge in shots on net in the first half and had a couple of solid scoring chances turned away early. They finally broke through in the 24th minute when
Amanda Opalinski (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) got a loose ball in the box off a corner kick and scored her second goal of the year to stake the Yellowjackets to the lead.
Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) started the play with the corner kick that hit traffic before caroming to Opalinski who scored for the second time in her last three matches.
The score stayed that way into the second half, and after the break the Vikings began to apply pressure. They drew even when a through ball found Bailey Bakken and she chipped a shot past Yellowjacket goalkeeper
Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka) in the 65th minute to square the match.
The Yellowjackets had a golden opportunity to regain the lead in the 70th minute when
Liza Shelquist (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) was awarded a penalty kick, but Vikings' goalkeeper Zoe Kinakin stood tall and made the save preserving the tie. The teams went through the rest of the first half and then an overtime period tied. Then late in the second overtime Bridget Brown got a rebound off a free kick and scored, giving the Vikings the 2-1 win with just 3:03 to play in the final frame.
Shots favored the Yellowjackets 19-12, and the home team had an edge in shots on goal, as well, 13-9. Shelquist and Schussman accounted for over half the shots, as each finished the match with five. Shelquist had four shots on goal.
Gutekunst finished the match with seven saves for the Yellowjackets.
Up Next: The Yellowjackets (2-6-1, 2-3-0 U.M.A.C.) will stay home for the second game of their four-game home stand when they host St. Scholastica. The opening kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 2.
