ST. PAUL, Minn.: As part of its 2018-19 "10-Year Celebration," the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (U.M.A.C.) named five individuals to the U.M.A.C. Women's Basketball All-Decade Team and selected a Coach of the Decade and Team of the Decade, the conference announced Thursday.
Among those honored are former Yellowjacket standout
Hailey Kontny (Superior, Wis./Superior), while the 2015-16 Yellowjackets were named the U.M.A.C. Women's Basketball Team of the Decade.
Kontny, who graduated from UW-Superior in May 2018 and is currently a member of the girls basketball coaching staff at Superior High School, was one of five players named to the all-decade squad. In her stellar three-year Yellowjacket career, Kontny scored 1,208 points, which is good for sixth on the school's all-time scoring charts. She helped the Yellowjackets win three straight U.M.A.C. regular season and playoff championships and make the program's first-ever trips to the N.C.A.A. tournament.
Individually, Kontny was named U.M.A.C. Player of the Year three consecutive years, making her the only player in the history of the conference to accomplish the feat. Additionally, Kontny was named All-U.M.A.C. First Team three times and in 2018 was also named the U.M.A.C. Tournament Most Valuable Player. She was also a two-time All-West Region pick by d3hoops.com.
Kontny was part of the first Yellowjacket team to compete in the U.M.A.C., and it was that 2015-16 team that was named the U.M.A.C. Team of the Decade.
Entering the U.M.A.C. on the heels of the program's first-ever W.I.A.C. championship, the 2015-16 Yellowjackets made their presence known in a big way, running roughshod over the rest of the conference. They were a perfect 16-0 during the regular season (a streak that would reach 53 games before being snapped in January 2019) and won their games by an average of 20.3 points per game. The Yellowjackets followed the perfect regular season with a perfect playoff, earning the title with a home win over Northwestern to secure the trip to the N.C.A.A. tournament where they would meet, ironically, former W.I.A.C. foe UW-Oshkosh.
In addition to Kontny's Player of the Year award mentioned above, Sarah Lekson was named the U.M.A.C. Tournament Most Valuable Player and Don Mulhern was named the U.M.A.C. Coach of the Year.
