SUPERIOR, Wis.: Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for his second consecutive, and fifth double-double of the season, to help the UW-Superior men's basketball team past Minnesota Morris, 72-67, at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Saturday.
Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) (17 points) and
Carter Brown (Eau Claire, Wis. /Regis Catholic) (11) also scored in double figures, as the Yellowjackets earned their third straight win to improve to 5-13 and 3-6 in the UMAC. The victory gives UWS its longest winning streak since beating Morris, Crown and North Central consecutively in January 2017.
Scott shot 8-for-15 from the field and had three assists and two steals, while Reykdal added two boards, two assists and two steals. Brown had four boards and two steals, as well.
The 'Jackets were 25-of-50 as a team from the field, shooting 50 percent or better for the fourth time in five games.
After a back-and-fourth first five-plus minutes,
Adam Arroyo (St. Paul, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran Academy) and Scott gave UWS a 15-10 lead with a 3-pointer and layup at 12:39 mark. The Cougars' Noah Grove responded with a layup before Reykdal and
John Pioro (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) knocked down treys, on either side of a Morris basket, for a 21-14 advantage with 11 minutes left in the half.
Thomas Robarge (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls Senior) hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to 28-19, the largest of the game, with 7:33 before intermission.
Minnesota Morris (6-11, 4-5) came all the way back to tie the game at 33 with two minutes left in the half on a Nick Peterson jumper. Morris retook the lead twice more on single free throws by Jeremy Halverson and Grove but a Scott jumper with 27 seconds left sent the 'Jackets into the locker room up, 37-36.
Down by four, 57-53, with 7:17 to play Reykdal,
Andrew McGill (St. Germain, Wis./Lakeland Union) and Scott combined for six quick points for the 'Jackets to retake the lead, 59-57, with 4:52 remaining. Jeremy Halverson got the rebound of his own miss on the next time down the floor and put it back up and in for a 59-all tie.
Ronny Galvan (Beloit, Wis./Beloit Turner) hit a free throw for a 60-59 lead with 4:08 left before the Cougars scored four straight from the line take a 63-60 lead. With 2:30 remaining,
Joseph Kramer (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) drained a triple for the tie, and Scott followed with a three-point play for 66-63 edge. Morris responded one more time with a 3-pointer by Jeffrey Halverson, before Reykdal later stripped him of the ball and went the other way for a layup, giving the 'Jackets the lead at 68-66, with 39 seconds left, one they held for good.
The Cougars put four players in double digits, led by Jeffrey Halverson's 16 points.
The 'Jackets travel to Northland on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m.
