SUPERIOR, Wis.:Â Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) scored 22 points on 7-for-15 shooting to reach the 1,000-point plateau, as the UW-Superior men's basketball team threatened UMAC-leading Crown into the second half, before falling, 83-70, on Wednesday.
Â
Needing just six points to reach the milestone, Scott wasted little time becoming the latest player in the program history to hit the mark, doing so with a pair of free throws seven minutes into the game.Â
Â
Scott's free throws gave the Yellowjackets an early 14-6 lead, an edge they carried for most of the first half. Superior held a two-point, 37-35 lead at halftime before Crown (9-3, 4-0 UMAC) used a 48-point final period to pull away for the victory.
Â
Crown's Timothy Wendel finished with a game-high 31 points and 16 rebounds, including 19 points and nine boards in the second half, to lead the way.
Â
UWS started strong making 14-of-28 attempts from the floor in the first half to stake itself to an eight-point lead on two occasions.
Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) gave the 'Jackets the second of the two with a layup at the 12:12 mark of the half, making it a 16-8 game.
Â
From there, the Storm whittled the deficit to just one in less than six minutes, eventually taking the lead for their first time, 27-26, with 5:27 remaining on a Kole Jusczak basket.Â
Â
A
Lucas LaMue (De Pere, Wis./Bay Port) 3-pointer handed UWS the lead again two minutes later, but Crown used a 6-0 run, punctuated by a Wendel dunk, to open a 33-29 advantage with 3:14 to go before halftime. The 'Jackets responded with four consecutive to knot things at 33-all, and after a Logan Strand layup, Da'Koi Hines and
Nick Ackerman (Pine River, Wis./Pine River-Backus) restored the Superior lead going into the break.
Â
Crown's Keegan Oyugi tied the game, 37-37 in the first minute of the second half, before Reykdal knocked down a three to give the 'Jackets their last lead of the game. The Storm then engineered a 14-3 run to take control, leading, 51-43, with 14:43 to play.
Â
Christian Moore gave Crown its first double-digit lead of the game following a D'Andre Caster steal, 57-46, at the 12-minute mark. Scott got UWS (2-11, 1-4) back to within 60-54 midway through the half, but the 'Jackets could get no closer.
Â
Scott finished with seven rebounds and four assists before fouling out. Reykdal and
Andrew McGill (St. Germain, Wis./Lakeland Union) were the other UWS players in double figures with 16 and 14 points, respectively.Â
Â
Crown won the boards, 49-30, and doubled up the 'Jackets, 42-24, in the paint, also holding them scoreless in second-chance opportunities.
UWS travels to Bethany Lutheran Saturday for a 4:45 p.m., tip.
