RIVER FALLS, Wis.: Fifth-ranked UW-River Falls scored twice in less than six minutes, completing a weekend, and season-series sweep of the UW-Superior women's hockey team with a 2-1 win at Hunt Arena Saturday.
River Falls got goals from Alyson Niebur at 13:22 and Madi Nolan on the power play at 19:08 of the first period and held on.
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island) scored her sixth goal of the season short-handed for the Yellowjackets. UWS fell to 7-15-1 overall and 0-7-1 in WIAC play with the loss.
McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) drew her second consecutive start, making a career-high 39 saves, including 15 in the first period.
River Falls improved to 19-2-0 and 7-0-0 in the league with the win.
Niebur opened the scoring beating Whalen on assists from Erica Schramel and Hailey Herdine. Nolan then converted the Falcons' first power play of the game with help from Abigail Stow and Reilly Springman.
The 'Jackets were outshot, 17-3, in the first period and 41-14 for the game.
Killing River Falls' third power play of the night, Shelton scored her first short-handed goal of the season from
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) at 8:13 of the second period.
The Falcons finished 1-for-5 with an extra skater, while UWS came up empty in two chances. Tatyana Delaittre made 13 saves for the win in net for the Falcons.
Superior is back in action Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m., hosting St. Scholastica at Wessman Arena.
