St. Scholastica Too Much for Yellowjackets

SUPERIOR, Wis.: Three St. Scholastica players scored double figures and the Saints shot 55.9 percent from the field to beat the UW-Superior men's basketball team, 86-52, at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Thursday.

CSS doubled up the Yellowjackets, 48-24, in the first half, cruising to its 11th win of the season. The Saints are now 11-9 overall and 8-4 in the UMAC. Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) paced UWS with 15 points and three assists as the 'Jackets fell to 6-15 and 4-8 in the league.

Scholastica scored 44 points in the paint, got 33 from its reserves and held a 39-23 rebounding advantage for the game.

Up, 15-11, the Saints used a 7-0 run punctuated by a Nate Weets layup at the 10:14 mark of the first half to take a 22-11 lead. Brandon Newman's basket with just less than five minutes remaining in the half pushed the lead to 20 points for the first time at 38-18.

The 'Jackets never were able to get closer than that in the second half as the Saints led by as many as 42 at 86-44 on a Jake Rademacher 3-pointer with 3:48 to play, and coasted to the finish.

Newman scored a game-high 21 points on 8-for-9 shooting, while Quinn Fischer and Collin Anderson each scored 15 points for the Saints.

Andrew McGill (St. Germain, Wis./Lakeland Union), Adam Arroyo (St. Paul, Minn./St. Croix Lutheran Academy) and Montroy Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) each scored six points for Superior, who shot 43 percent in the second half.

UWS hits the road to face Crown Saturday 4:45 p.m., at the Wild Athletic Center.
