SUPERIOR, Wis.: Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) scored a career-high-tying 25 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the UW-Superior women's basketball team to a 71-61 victory over Northwestern at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Wednesday.
Reinertsen shot 9-for-13 from the field, 3-of-6 from 3-point range and collected her second double-double of the season as the Yellowjackets improved to 13-2 overall and 6-1 in UMAC play.
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) scored 11 points and handed out five assists, while
Taylor Kane (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) added seven points, 10 rebounds and five assists of her own.
Hannah Norlin (Litchfield, Minn./Litchfield) scored nine points and corralled eight boards.
UWS shot 50 percent in the second half to take control of a tight game after 20 minutes.
Northwestern led, 11-10, after the first quarter, before Reinertsen and Carpenter had consecutive baskets in the first minute of the second to open a 15-12 lead.
Reinertsen hit a jumper for a 21-14 lead with 6:18 to play in the half, but the Eagles used an 8-1 run over the next 2:18 to knot the game at 22. The teams traded buckets for the rest of the half for 27-27 game at the break.
With the game tied at 38 with three minutes remaining in the third, Reinertsen scored six consecutive points – four from the free-throw line – to open a six-point advantage. The 'Jackets carried a 48-44 lead into the fourth quarter.
UNW's Miranda Crenshaw cut the Superior lead to four at 56-52 with a layup with 6:19 remaining prior to Carpenter and Reinertson hitting back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead to double figures, 62-52, at the 4:17 mark. Amy Berglund knocked down a three to get the Eagle to within 64-59 with 1:11 left, but that was as close as UNW got.
The Eagles, who fell to 7-8 and 4-2 in the league with the loss, put four players in double digits. Kelsea Lund scored a team-high 14 points, while Berglund and Brooklyn DeKam had 13 points each. Rio Landers was the other UMW player in double digits with 11 points.
The 'Jackets won the rebounding battle, 44-28, turning 21 offensive rebounds into 24 second-chance points.
Superior hosts North Central Saturday at 3 p.m.
