SUPERIOR, Wis. – Junior
Cami Sletta (Willmar, Minn./Willmar Senior) and freshman
Gina Baertsch (Farmington, Minn./Farmington Area) each recorded double-digit kills for the UW-Superior volleyball team but St. Scholastica prevailed, 3-1, in UMAC action at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Wednesday.

Sletta tallied 14 kills and Baertsch had 12 to pace UWS. Brooke Schermann led a group of three Saints with double-figure kills, putting down 19. Jessica Remer had 16 and Haley Rower collected 11 for St. Scholastica (14-4, 5-1 UMAC).Â

The Saints won by set scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-18.

Yana Carrera (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West Senior) had a career-high 38 digs for the UWS (11-15, 3-2).
Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) tallied 24 and
Hailey Atwood (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) contributed 20.

The Saints opened the match with a 5-0 run, before UWS came all the way back to tie the set at 12-12 with back-to-back kills by Baertsch and one from Sletta. St. Scholastica scored the next five points, taking a 17-12 advantage on a Katie Brostrom service ace. Two more kills by Sletta cut it to a 17-14 lead, but the Saints won eight of the final 13 points to claim the set.

The 'Jackets rebounded in the second set to tie the match. UWS led, 8-3, early, before CSS closed to within 14-13 on a Schermann kill assisted by Espi Austvold. From there, the teams traded points to 19-16.

Up, 22-20, the 'Jackets got a block from Baertsch and
Hannah Goggleye (Calumet, Minn./Greenway). They closed the set three points later on consecutive Goggleye kills.

After UWS won the first point of the third set on a
Cassy Teff (Foley, Minn./Foley) kill, the Saints ran off six of the next points for a 6-3 lead. The deficit grew to 17-12 on a Remer kill from Brostrom.
Teah Roszkowiak (Pleasant Prairie, Wis./Tremper) cut the lead to 17-13 with a kill before CSS scored four of the next five points for a 21-14 lead, cruising to a 2-1 edge in the match.

In the fourth, the Saints jumped out to a 10-4 lead before two kills by Colligan, one from Sletta and another by Teff knotted the set at 11-11. UWS never regained the lead from that point and CSS scored the final five points to take the match.

The Saints outhit Superior, .205-.128, with 64 kills to 52. UWS led in blocks, 8-4.

UWS is back in action Saturday hosting Bethany Lutheran at 3 p.m., in its final regular-season home match.
