NEW ULM, Minn. – Senior forward Eric Watson (Thunder Bay, Ontario/Hammarskjold) finished a penalty kick inside the right post in the 102nd minute to help the UW-Superior men's soccer team escape with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Martin Luther Saturday.
The Yellowjackets, who have not lost an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference match since Oct. 3, 2017 at St Scholastica – a span of 19 matches – were battling from the start. Martin Luther scored just 61 seconds into the match and held the lead until the 53rd minute.
That's when Miquel Ocampo took a pass from Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) and beat MLC goalkeeper Josh Higgins high to the far post to tie the match at 1-1 The goal was Ocampo's second of the season.
In the second extra-time period. UWS was pressuring and got fouled in the penalty area. Watson stepped up to the spot and buried his seventh goal of the season for the win.
Superior, which outshot Martin Luther 49-9 for the match, including 20-3 in shots on target, improved to 7-2-2 and 3-0-0 in the UMAC play. The Knights dropped to 3-7-2 overall and 1-1-0 in the league.
Martin Luther scored first as Lucas Martin sprung Joe Graumann with a pass behind the defense. Graumann beat UWS goalie Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) low to the left post for the lead.
Higgins took the loss making 18 saves for MLC. Payton Anderson (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing) earned the win in the UWS net. He played the final 56:23 after VonKaenel started and made one save. Anderson also stopped one shot.
The 'Jackets have a quick turnaround, traveling to Luther Sunday for a 2 kickoff with the No. 18 Norse.
