WINONA, Minn. – St. Mary's scored five times in the first half and Jordyn Matthews scored two goals as the Cardinals defeated the UW-Superior women's soccer team, 8-0, at Ochrymowycz Field Monday.
St. Mary's (6-5-0) opened the scoring in the seventh minute and never looked back. The Cardinals led, 4-0, after just 30 minutes.
Kassie Arriaga scored her third goal of the season from Melina Rodriguez for a 1-0 lead, before Matthews tallied the first of two consecutive goals in the in the 14th. She then made it 3-0 in the 23rd with her 12 goal of the year. Both of Matthews' markers were assisted by Keaton Cloven, the only other play to figure into multiple goals for the match.
Claire Fletcher (29th) and Avery Sutton (36th) also scored in the half to give SMU a 5-0 advantage going to the break.
Natalie Ruegsegger made it 6-0 in the 58th minute off an assist by Haddy Falkman. Haylee Queen made it 7-0 from Maya Reichenbacher in the 79th and Abbi Mazurek closed the scoring in the 82nd minute off of an assist from Liv Legg.
Morgan Philliber (Apple Valley, Minn./Edina) and
Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka) split time in the UWS nets while Philliber playing the first half. Both goalkeepers made six saves on the night. Gabriella Pederson stopped freshman
Ivy Grochowski's (Duluth, Minn./Denfield) shot in the 66th minute for her only save of the match.
The Yellowjackets (2-7-2) return home to face North Central in UMAC Play Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
