SUPERIOR, Wis. – Four Augsburg players scored double figures paced by 21 points from Camryn Speese as the Auggies spoiled the UW-Superior women's basketball team's home opener, 81-55, on Monday.
Augsburg shot 40 percent (27-for-67) from the field, including 11 3-pointers, to run away with its season opener after a close first nine minutes.
Senior
Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) led the Yellowjackets (0-2) with 17 points and eight rebounds. Classmate
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) added nine points, seven assists and four steals.
Tamira McLemore chipped in 17 points, six boards and four assists for Augsburg, which has now won the last two in the series. The 'Jackets still lead, 11-7, dating back to 1982.
Trailing, 13-9, with four minutes remaining in the first quarter, Reinertsen hit a jumper from Carpenter to cut the lead to two. Carpenter then stripped Arianna Jones of the ball on the next possession and streaked the other way for a layup and 13-all tie.
Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) hit a layup to tie the game again at 15-15 before the Auggies scored five consecutive and nine-of -11 points to take a 24-17 advantage through 10 minutes.
Carpenter stole the ball from McLemore and fed
Kaly Kostrova (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) for the first bucket of the second quarter, making it 24-19 with nine minutes to play in the half, but Augsburg used a 13-5 run to take a 38-25 lead with six minutes gone in the period.
The 23rd-ranked Auggies led, 43-29, at the break and extended it to a 64-44 edge after three quarters.
Augsburg held a 46-36 advantage on the glass for the game and had 17 assists. The Auggies benefitted from 19 UWS turnovers, converting them into 25 points.
All 17 players saw the floor for the 'Jackets with 11 scoring points.
Superior is back in action this weekend in the Max Ziel Women's Basketball Tournament at Oswego State. UWS plays the host Lakers at 5:30 p.m., Friday and either Clarkson or Morris State Saturday.
