SUPERIOR, Wis. – Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) and
Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB Belgrade (Serbia)) combined for 41 points and 12 rebounds to lead the UW-Superior men's basketball team to a 75-69 win over Concordia (Minn.) at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Tuesday.
UWS shot a blistering 72 percent from the floor (18-for-25) in the first half to run out to a 43-28 halftime lead and held on down the stretch.
The win gives the Yellowjackets victories in two of their first three games for the first time since the 2014-15 season when UWS opened with wins against St. Scholastica Nov. 16 and Crown Nov. 21 that season.
Reykdal scored 21 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out two assists while Milenkovic poured in 20 and pulled down seven boards.
Allen Anderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) chipped in with 16 points, two steals and two assists.
Superior hit six consecutive shots in a 4:50 span to take a 19-16 lead midway through the opening period. Three players scored in the run with
Colton Williams (Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights) leading the way with five points.
Concordia's Tommy Schyma tied the game, 19-19 with a 3-pointer with 9:26 remaining before the 'Jackets used five consecutive points from Reykdal and a trifecta by Milenkovic to extend it to a 27-19 edge with 6:33 left in the half.
The lead grew to 30-21 with a Reykdal three, assisted by Williams, and then to 33-23 on another Milenkovic trey.
The 'Jackets opened a 20-point, 48-28 advantage on Milenkovic jumper in the lane just over a minute into the second half, before Concordia shaved the deficit to 52-41 on a Bryden Urie 3-pointer at the 14:36 mark.
Superior got the lead back to 16 twice more on a three from Anderson and an
Eli Vogel (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) basket, but Concordia refused to quit. Schyma grabbed a rebound and hit a three at the other end to get to the Cobbers to within eight points at 61-53 with 4:41 to play. The 'Jackets were able to put the game away going 10-of-14 from the free-throw line in the final two minutes to ensure the win.
UWS held a slim 29-25 advantage on the glass and turned 12 Cobber turnovers into 13 points.
UWS shot 53.8 percent for the game and Concordia (0-2) countered with 51 percent. The Cobbers were led by Schyma with 25 points, pacing a group of three visitors in double digits.
