ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – Senior Eva Reinertson recorded a game-high 20 points and six assists to pace the UW-Superior women's basketball team in a 66-59 loss to Saint Benedict at Claire Lynch Hall Thursday.
Reinertsen shot 9-for-18 from the floor, grabbed two rebounds and blocked two shots for the Yellowjackets, who dropped their second consecutive game to fall to 2-4.
Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) scored 16 points and dished out five assists, while
Pashia Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) tallied 11 points and brought down eight rebounds.
UWS never led in the game, but kept it close throughout. The 'Jackets trailed by just three, 13-10, after the first quarter and only seven, 53-46, heading into the final period.
Reinertsen started the fourth with a layup off of a pass from Carpenter to make it a 53-48 game, but the Bennies got two free throws from McKenzie Holgate and a layup by Megan Thompson to push the lead to nine.
Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) answered with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 57-51 with six-and-a-half minutes to play. St. Benedict used a bucket by Alex Johnson on the next possession following a UWS timeout for a 59-51 lead.
Carpenter then knocked down a 3-pointer to shave the lead to five with 5:20 remaining. The 'Jackets were unable to get closer than four the rest of the way as the Bennies hit three free throws in the final minute to ensure the win.
The Bennies improved to 4-0 with the victory, placing three players in double figures. Sidney Shiffler had 14, four rebounds and three steals for CSB, while Thompson tallied 12 points, five assists and four steals. Holgate contributed 11 points and Johnson just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 boards.
Superior returns to the court at UW-Eau Claire Saturday, Nov 30. Tip-off at Zorn Arena is slated for 5 p.m.
