VALENCIA, Pa.: Superior finds itself in the teeth of an historic winter storm. Expected to dump well over a foot of snow, the Twin Ports will resemble a snow globe when all is said and done. Because of its long trip to Pennsylvania, the Yellowjacket men's hockey team will miss most of the snowfall, but will be forced to deal with the aftermath upon its return.
Â
Dealing with that aftermath will be a little easier, as the Yellowjackets will return home with two more wins and a three-game winning streak.
Â
Following Friday's 5-1 win, the Yellowjackets completed their sweep of Chatham Saturday afternoon, riding two first-period goals to a 3-1 win over the Cougars at Frozen Pond Arena.
Â
With the win the Yellowjackets improve to 5-1-0 overall, the first time since 2012-13 they have won five of their first six games.
Â
Chatham came out with a lot of jump in the first, controlling the play early and getting four of the first five shots on goal. The Yellowjackets weathered the storm and eventually broke through at 5:51 of the first period when
Bruno Birzitis (Riga, Latvia/Riga Distance Education Secondary) scored his first goal of the season to give the 'Jackets a 1-0 lead.
Coltyn Bates (Brandon, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate) started the play, pushing the puck toward the front of the Chatham goal and Birzitis finished it, tipping the puck past Chatham goaltender Ricardo Gonzalez for his first of the year.
Â
Late in the period the Yellowjackets increased the lead.
Jordan Martin (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate) carried the puck down the right wing and saucered a perfect pass to
Andrew Durham (Richardson, Texas/Plano East), and the senior forward snapped a shot from the left circle past Gonzlez to make it 2-0 with 90 seconds left in the period.
Conor MacLean (Wilcox, Saskatchewan /Athol Murray College of Notre Dame) also picked up an assist, earning his first collegiate point on the play.
Â
Chatham cut into the Yellowjacket lead at 8:07 of the second period when its leading goal scorer, Niko Moulakelis beat goaltender
Oscar Svensson (Södertälje, Sweden/Haga Gymnasium) with a backhand to make it 2-1.
The Yellowjackets got that goal back at 14:26 of the second. Birzitis made a pass from the left wing to a streaking
Levi Cudmore (Park River, N.D./Park River), and he made no mistake, converting the pass with a blistering shot to the top corner of the net to give the 'Jackets a 3-1 lead.
Â
Both teams had chances in the third period, but nobody found the back of the net the rest of the way.
Â
Svensson made the start for the Yellowjackets and stopped 29 of the 30 shots he faced, to improve his record to 4-1-0 for the year.
The Yellowjackets outshot Chatham 36-30 for the contest.
