‘Jackets Sweep Bethany Lutheran in UMAC Volleyball Quarterfinals

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Junior Cami Sletta (Willmar, Minn./Willmar Senior) tallied 15 kills and sophomore Hannah Goggleye (Calumet, Minn./Greenway) registered 12 to lead the UW-Superior volleyball team to a 3-0 win over Bethany Lutheran in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference quarterfinals Monday at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
 
UWS (16-18) hit .340 as team and held the visiting Vikings to a .178 attack percentage, winning, 25-19, 25-12, and 25-18. With the win, the fourth-seeded Yellowjackets advance to take on top-seed Northwestern Wednesday at 7 p.m. in St. Paul, Minn. Bethany Lutheran's season ends at 11-17 overall.
 
Sletta hit .522 with only three errors in 23 attacks to pace the 'Jackets. Goggleye threw in three blocks, while senior Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) led a group of three Superior players with double-digit kills. Colligan had 15, freshman Yana Carrera (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West Senior) recorded 14 and junior Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) 10.
 
Leading, 10-6, UWS took control of the opening set, winning three of the next five points and eight of 10 overall to take an 18-8 advantage. Sletta converted three kills in the last four points in the run.
 
BLC ran off the next three points and crept to within 23-18 on an Alexis Morsching kill. The 'Jackets, though, won three points later with the help of two BLC errors.
 
In the second set, Superior jumped out to a 7-1 edge, ending the spurt on a block by Cassy Teff (Foley, Minn./Foley) and kill from Sletta. Teff and Colligan kills widened the the UWS lead to 17-6, as it cruised to a two-set lead.
 
The third set was the tightest of the three with the Vikings hoiding a 12-10 lead on a block by Mindy Poehler, coupled with a Megan Rutt kill.
 
The 'Jackets stormed back, winning 10 of the next 12 points to claim a 20-14. UWS put the match away with a kill from Sletta and a Colligan ace on match point for the victory.
 
BLC was led by Rutt and Morsching with a 11 kills apiece. Veeva Lee had a match-high 16 digs.
