SUPERIOR, Wis.: After an opening night win against the Cardinals of Saint Mary's, the Yellowjackets came out to face the Oles of Saint Olaf, and came away with another win. Last night's game saw a barrage of scoring from the Yellowjackets, but the same would not be the story tonight.
The Yellowjackets had to fight for every inch of ice against St. Olaf, on a night where nothing came easy. In the end the power play came through when it mattered most, scoring three times to lift the Yellowjackets to a 3-2 Saturday night at Wessman Arena.
The victory marks the first time since 2016-17 that the Yellowjackets opened the season 2-0-0.
Penalties, like last night's contest, played a large role in the first period. St. Olaf would be called for four penalties in the first, with Superior being whistled for three. After a holding penalty from Lucas Mutschelknaus at 11:29 in the first,
Andrew Durham (Richardson, Texas/Plano East) was able to handle a centering pass from
Pavel Mikhasenok (Yekaterinburg, Russia/Everest Academy) and bury the puck from the bottom of the left circle at 11:48.
Jordan Martin (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate) would tally an assist on the play as well.
St. Olaf would turn a Paul Stehr tripping penalty into a positive at the end of the first. Will Dittrich received a pass from Kyle Rimbach, got behind the defense, and beat goaltender
Oscar Svensson (Södertälje, Sweden/Haga Gymnasium) glove side with a wrist shot to equalize the score at 19:14.
Andrew Durham (Richardson, Texas/Plano East) would capitalize on the power play again in the second, picking the top corner with a rocket from the left circle to put the 'Jackets ahead 2-1 at 12:32 in the period. The remainder of the period would see plenty of shots, but neither side could find the netting, with the Yellowjackets outshooting the Oles 15-10 in the second period.
The 'Jackets would light the lamp again on the power play in the third period. Mikhasenok wasted no time beating Parker, after he took a pass from Durham in the center of the ice and ripped a shot into the top right of the net, extending the Superior lead to 3-1.
St. Olaf's last ditch effort to bring the game back would be a classic case of too little, too late. With an extra attacker on the ice, Rimbach took a pass from Roshen Jaswal from just inside the blue line and put a shot behind Svensson to cut their deficit to one at 19:33.
Superior would be able to clear the puck with just under 10 seconds remaining, and a prayer shot from St. Olaf's blue line would not be answered, as Svensson knocked the puck away with his blocker to end the game.
Noah Parker had a strong game in goal for St. Olaf, and would end the night with 36 saves on 39 shots on net.
Svensson, who picked up his second win of the weekend in goal, ended with 19 saves on 21 shots.
Superior's next game will be at home against the UW-Eau Claire Friday, November 22. Game time from Wessman Arena is set for 7:05 p.m.
