Yellowjackets Complete Sweep of Northland; Win 7-0

Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis.: Two wins, in two nights, against the same team.

For the second time this season, the Yellowjackets pulled off that feat, with the first coming on Nov. 29-30 at Chatham University in Pittsburgh, Pa. This time, however, it came in a home-and-home series against Northland College. Even more important, with Northland now a member of the WIAC, the games come with points in the standings.

After a 4-2 win in Ashland last night, the 'Jackets came out firing tonight, matching their goal total from the previous game in just the first period, while scoring three more for a 7-0 win at Wessman Arena.

Superior improved to 8-2-0 overall with the win. In WIAC play, the Yellowjackets are 4-2-0, and coupled with Eau Claire's Saturday loss to Stevens Point, now sit in first place in the conference with nine points.

Lawson McDonald (Rosetown, Manitoba/Northlands Parkway Collegiate) got the scoring party started early on in the first when he scooped up a loose puck, hesitated to let his men get back onside, then entered the offensive zone before firing a wrist shot from the right circle past the blocker of starting goaltender Taylor Unruh at 1:41.

Andrew Durham (Richardson, Texas/Plano East) decided he liked what he saw out of McDonald's score and decided to do his own take of it a few minutes later. Durham took a pass near the middle of the ice in the offensive zone from Jordan Martin (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey Collegiate), skated to near the same spot where McDonald scored, and fired a wrist shot at almost exactly the same spot in the top left corner as the last score at 8:54.

Unruh was pulled from net after the second goal, being replaced by Gennaro Anzevino. The change in net would not stop the 'Jackets from scoring, however.

The "Tandem of Troy" would account for the next two goals, with Troy York (Plano, Texas/West) striking first. York beat Anzevino on a wrist shot to the left side of the net from the middle of the offensive zone at 10:54, and Troy MacTavish (Kanata, Ontario/Earl of March) would follow suit just a minute later. At 11:58, MacTavish took a pass on the left side of the net from Liam Blais (Uxbridge, Ontario/Uxbridge Secondary), glided over to the right, and flicked a shot into the left leg pad of Anzevino. MacTavish quickly controlled the rebound and flipped the puck over the outstretched goaltender to make the score 4-0.

The only score of the second period would come off the stick of Pavel Mikhasenok (Yekaterinburg, Russia/Everest Academy), who trailed Blais into the zone and picked up the rebound, calmly putting the puck in the back of the net at 16:36. Being a man down, this was the only 'Jacket score not coming at even strength.

York decided he wanted to score again in the third, when he took a wrist shot from that same spot in the right circle in which McDonald and Durham scored, and put the puck past Anzevino in the top left corner to make the score 6-0 at 7:05. After tonight's game, York is tied for second on the team with 5 goals in just 7 games played so far this season.

Dylan Johnson (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet) ended the scoring with a bang at 8:32, ripping a slap shot from just inside the blue line into the net before anyone had the chance to react. The goal from Johnson tied the 'Jackets season high in goals and marked their second 7-0 win of the year.

Unruh allowed two goals, saving three shots on the night and is tagged with the loss. In his relief, Anzevino allowed five goals while saving 30 shots.

Oscar Svensson (Södertälje, Sweden/Haga Gymnasium) dazzled once again, saving 22 shots while notching his second shutout of the season. His record improved to 6-2-0 on the season.
