‘Jackets Nipped by Bethany Lutheran as Reinertsen Reaches 1,000 Points

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Bethany Lutheran's Abby Olson hit the game-winning shot with 12 seconds remaining at the Vikings nipped the UW-Superior women's basketball team, 69-68, at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Saturday.

Olson spun in the lane and laid the ball up and in for the go-ahead basket. Following a timeout, the Yellowjackets inbounded the ball from half court, getting it to senior Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) for a jump shot. The attempt was short, giving the Vikings the victory.

The ending spoiled a special day for Reinertsen, who drained a jumper with 7:34 remaining in the second quarter to become the 12th player in UWS women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau. The shot gave UWS a 29-27 lead, an edge it carried into halftime.

Reinertsen led a group of four UWS starters in double figures with 20 points while pulling down 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) chipped in with 17 points, five assists and five steals, while Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) tallied 12 points and four steals. Pashia Scott (Fridley, Minn./Columbia Heights) finished with 10 points as the 'Jackets dropped to 5-5 on the year and 3-1 in the UMAC.

Superior led, 44-40, at the break, but saw the edge slip away. The Vikings opened a 56-52 advantage on a pair of Olson free throws with 3:32 left in the third. Kaly Kostrova (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander) nailed a trey and Carpenter a layup to regain the lead at 57-56 with a minute remaining the quarter, but Skylar Cottonscored on the next possession to give the lead back to BLC heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Vikings scored the first five points in the fourth to open a 63-57 lead on an Olson jumper in transition. Superior erased that lead, however, as Reinertsen knocked down a pair of free throws to give her team a 66-65 lead with 1:15 to play.  Hanna Geistfeld answered wit a jumper on the next trip. Reinertsen then was fouled by Olson with 23 seconds on the clock.

She stepped to the line and hit both, giving UWS a 68-67 lead, and setting the stage for the final sequence.

The 'Jackets return to action Dec. 29-30, hosting the Superior Shootout Holiday Classic. UWS plays Finlandia the first day and Waldorf the second, with both games tipping off at 3 p.m.
