John Pioro (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) recorded a career-high 15 points, but the UW-Superior men's basketball team fell, 83-71, to North Central Saturday.
With the loss, the Yellowjackets' season ends at 6-19 overall, including a 4-12 mark in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. North Central's year also comes to a close at 6-19. The Rams earned their only conference victory of the season against the 'Jackets.
North Central jumped out to 36-27 halftime lead on the strength of 55 percent shooting from the field. NCU made 16 of its 29 attempts in the first half, leading for most of the way.
A Pioro 3-pointer with 10:25 remaining in the half got Superior to within 18-16. Scott followed with a basket two-and-a-half minutes later to cut the NCU lead to 21-20. With the Rams up, 27-23, with 6:28 left before halftime,
Joseph Kramer (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) again pushed the 'Jackets to within one at 27-26 on a trey, but the Rams closed the period with a 9-1 run.
North Central continued its hot shooting in the second half, knocking down nearly 61 percent in the final 20 minutes. The Rams built their lead to 13 points when an A.J. McGrew layup made it 45-32 with 17:25 remaining.
Superior whittled the deficit to 49-42 with 14:05 on a Pioro three-point play. The Rams, though, were able to keep their distance, not letting UWS closer than six points the rest of the day.
The 'Jackets were out rebounded, 37-32, but
Ronny Galvan (Beloit, Wis./Beloit Turner) snagged a game-high eight boards in the loss. As a team, UWS shot 50 percent in the second half, making 15 shots from the field.
Micah Filer led all players with 21 points for the Rams who put four in double figures. Jared High had 16 points, McGrew 13 points and Jack Martin 10 as NCU sent 11th-year head coach Jon High into retirement with a win.
