‘Jackets Softball Beats Finlandia in Extras; Falls to Edgewood Sunday

MARQUETTE, Mich.: Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) reached on a fielder's choice to second base, scoring Tiffany Kirk (McHenry, Ill./McHenry East) from third, as the UW-Superior softball team walked off with an 8-7 win over the tournament-host Lions in eight innings, to close the Finlandia Dome Classic Sunday.

Tiffany Kirk (McHenry, Ill./McHenry East) started the bottom of the eighth with a double to field. Alayna Tulip (Arcadia, Wis./Arcadia) followed with a single, and with runners on first and third with no one out Kinnunen drove Kirk home with the winning run. The bouncing ball ended a wild game that saw a combined 15 runs, 25 hits and six errors.

Tulip paced the UWS (2-2) offense, going 3-for-5 with a double and a run, while Davrianna Horvath went 2-for-4 with a double, and Kirk also picked up two hits.

Finlandia (1-3) led, 3-0, through two-and-a-half innings. The 'Jackets plated four unearned runs in the third to take the lead, before Kassandra Avila's solo home run in the top of the fifth tied the game.

A Gabby Gidley (Superior, Wis./Superior) RBI double in the bottom of the inning keyed a two-run frame for the 'Jackets, but the Lions rallied for two of their own the to knot the game, 6-6 in the sixth. The teams traded runs in the seventh inning, sending it to extras.

Amanda Kishish (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) earned her second win of the season, allowing one hits in 1.2 innings of relief of Damara Theis (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee), who started and lasted 6.1 innings. Avila was tagged with the loss for the Lions after recording seven outs.

Superior was blanked, 5-0, by Edgewood in the first game of the day after committing six errors. Kishish struck out five and allowed just one walk in a complete game but surrendered four unearned runs.

The Eagles scored three times in the first and tacked on runs in the third and sixth innings for the final margin.

Maddy Coppens earned the win in the circle of the Eagles. She scattered eight hits, stuck out two and walked none.

Horvath was 2-for-3 for the 'Jackets at the plate.

Superior is now off until heading to The Spring Games in Kissimmee and Clermont, Fla., March 14-22. UWS opens its spring break trip against Fredonia and Delaware Valley at the Osceola Softball Complex March 14.
