Stevenson 4, Yellowjackets 0
CLERMONT, Fla.: The Yellowjacket softball team emerged from a day off refreshed and looking to pick up its first win of the spring trip to Florida. Thursday the Yellowjackets opened play in The Sunshine State and dropped their first two games, dropping their 2019 record to 2-4 overall.
Unfortunately, the day off wasn't the tonic needed to get the Yellowjackets back in the win column, as they were shut down offensively and fell 4-0 to Stevenson University out of Owings Mills, Maryland Saturday afternoon at Hancock Park.
Both teams found the going tough offensively early Saturday. The Yellowjackets went down in order in the first two innings and had a runner reach base in the third but couldn't push the run across. It was the same for Stevenson, as the Mustangs were held in check by Yellowjacket starter
Amanda Kishish (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis).
That all changed in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jessica Alicea delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single to get Stevenson on the board. In the bottom of the fifth Stevens had runners on second and third with nobody out, and a passed ball and error enabled both runners to score and push the Stevenson lead to 3-0. The Mustangs added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 4-0 game.
It was more than enough offense for the Mustangs, who shut down the Yellowjackets and held them to just one hit, a single by
Davriana Horvath (Esko, Minn./Esko) in the top of the fifth inning. The Yellowjackets did have multiple runners on base to threaten in the top of the seventh, but the Mustangs snuffed out the Yellowjacket rally attempt.
Kishish went the distance in the circle for the Yellowjackets, allowing four runs (three earned) on 11 hits in six innings. She walked two and struck out two.
The Yellowjackets' second game of the day against Rutgers-Camden was canceled due to rain and will not be made up.
