TUCSON, Ariz.: Down, 11-4, in its last at-bat in the bottom of the seventh inning of game two of a doubleheader with Augsburg Sunday, the UW-Superior baseball team battled back to score eight and walk off with a 12-11 win and sweep of the Auggies.
The Yellowjackets won the first game of the day, 5-4, to even their record at 2-2.
Leading, 5-4, through six innings, the Auggies (0-3) scored six runs in the top of the seventh and looked to have assured themselves of a split on the day, but the 'Jackets responded.
With one out,
Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) got the rally started with a single to left field.
Bryce Flanagan (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) followed with a single up the middle and
Matthew Boyde (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) then singled to right, driving in Flanagan and Albertson. Still with only one man out in the inning, an
Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West) single loaded the bases again and
Jake Kissane (Baroda, Mich./Lake Michigan Catholic) drove in Boyde to make it 11-7.
Nick Fredrikson (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) and
Jordan Berrios (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) forced in the next two runs with a walk and hit by pitch, respectively, for an 11-9 game.
Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) followed with a sacrifice fly to set the stage for Albertson who hit a bouncer to third that Augsburg's Walker Rogers gloved but threw wildly to first, allowing Berrios and Fredrikson to scamper all the way around the bases for the win.
The 'Jackets got a solid game-two start from
Boone Elkins (Riverside, Calif./Arlington) who allowed three hits and two earned runs, while walking four and striking out three.
The Auggies made headway when they got to the UWS bullpen, which threw three innings, surrendering nine runs, seven of which were earned.
Superior pounded out 12 hits in the nightcap, including home runs from Flanagan and
Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmount).
Freshman
Brandon Wing (Superior, Wis./Superior) picked up the win on the mound, recording the final out in the seventh before the comeback began.
Barr threw a complete-game five-hitter on the mound to lift Superior to the win in game one. He allowed two earned runs and one walk with six strikeouts.
The Auggies opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Dan Phyle plated Clayton Bodine with one out and later came around to score on a throwing error.
UWS took the lead with in the top of the third when Flanagan ripped a bases-loaded double down the left-field line scoring Albertson, Rolf and Berrios with one out.
After Augsburg scored a run in the bottom of the inning for a 3-3 tie, Miller led off the fourth with a homer to left and Berrios lifted a sac fly to left, scoring Osness.
The Auggies pulled a run back in the bottom of the frame, but Barr buckled down and retired 11 of the final 13 batters he faced to ensure the win.
