Baseball Splits with Finlandia; Wins Opener, 10-0

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior baseball team earned a split in its home opener Wednesday, beating Finlandia, 10-0, before falling, 13-6, at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The Yellowjackets brought the bats in game one, scoring in every inning but the sixth. Superior put up four runs in the second and three in the fifth for the win.

Bryce Flanagan (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) (1-1) went five innings for his first win of the season on the mound, surrendering just three hits and three walks while striking out three.

Jordan Berrios (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) was the catalyst at the top of the lineup, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two driven in and a stolen base to lead the way. Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.

Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont) gave Superior (6-8) the lead in the bottom of the first with a two-out single through the left side, scoring Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater), who reached on a fielder's choice.

Up, 3-0, in the second, Albertson doubled to center, plating Berrios and Rolf. They got on base with a fielder's choice and walk, respectively, before coming around to score.

UWS made it 10-0 in the fifth on consecutive two-out RBI singles by Berrios to left-center field, Cameron Lee (Durban, South Africa/Kearsney College) to center and Albertson up the middle.

The bullpen tandem of Dante Bender (Gurney, Wis./Hurley) and David Dibble (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) threw the final two innings, allowing one hit collectively. They each struck out a batter in nailing down the win.

Finlandia (3-13) jumped on game-two starter Brandon Wing (Superior, Wis./Superior) for six runs in the first two innings, including five in the second. The 'Jackets battled back to knot game, 6-6, with three runs in the third and two in the fifth.

Gunner Johnson (Superior, Wis./Superior) (0-1) was dominant in his first inning of relief, striking out the side – all swinging – on just 11 pitches in sixth. He walked Brian Doyle and Joey Krug to start the seventh, and, after retiring Nic Geiser, gave up a three-run home run to left field to Davonte Fleming.

The next three Lions reached, spelling the end for Johnson. Harrison Leet (Palmer, Alaska/Portage) was greeted with a two-run single by Patrick Coles, who later scored on a wild pitch, for the final margin.

Brandon Teichman (1-0) got the win for Finlandia, allowing one hit over the final two innings.

The 'Jackets open UMAC play Saturday, hosting Crown for a 1:30 p.m., doubleheader.
