ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – For the third time in a week, the UW-Superior baseball team squared off with MIAC foe Bethel, and for the third time the Royals topped the Yellowjackets, winning 12-1 at Hargis Park Thursday.
Â
The two teams took part in a doubleheader last Thursday at Ted Whereatt Field in Superior with Bethel coming out on top, 9-7 and 19-1.
Â
This time around, BU held Superior to just three hits – all singles – and two walks, completing a season sweep.
Â
Bethel (20-15) scored runs in seven innings, two in the first, third, fourth, fifth and three in the sixth.Â
Â
Superior (13-18) used seven pitchers and the Royals countered with six.Â
Â
Bethel pounded out 17 hits, getting multiple knocks from six different players. Leadoff batter Sam Horner went 3-for-5 with a walk and three runs scored. Mitch Butvilas and Thomas Friesen drove in three runs apiece. Butvilas and Marcus Krupke hit home runs.Â
Â
After Butvilas's homer to left-center field in the bottom of the first made it 2-0, the 'Jackets scored their only run in the third inning. With one out,
Mike Rodriguez (Chicago, Ill./Gordon Tech) singled to left off of the first man out of the bullpen, Jonathan Patterson.Â
Â
Jordan Berrios (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) was then hit by a pitch and
Nick Fredrikson (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) reached on a fielder's choice. With runners on first and third, Brady Leahy surrendered a RBI single through the left side by
Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) that scored Rodriguez for a 2-1 deficit.
Â
The 'Jackets would get no closer as BU broke the game open from there.
Â
Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont) got the start on the mound for Superior and was saddled with the loss, evening his record at 2-2. Barr lasted three innings, giving up six hits and four runs.
Boone Elkins (Riverside, Calif./Arlington),
Gunner Johnson (Superior, Wis./Superior),
Zach Bennett (Corona, Calif./Santiago),
Ryan Rodriguez (Chaska, Minn./Chaska),
David Dibble (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) and
Elliot Danhoff (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone) followed.
Jake Marsh (3-4) earned the win for Bethel, going two innings in a prearranged start length. He struck out three and allowed one hit.
Â
UWS heads to Minnesota Morris Saturday, needing at least one win to qualify for the upcoming UMAC tournament. The 'Jackets' doubleheader with the Cougars begins at 1:30 p.m.
