St. Scholastica Much for ‘Jackets in UMAC Softball Tourney Opener

MANKATO, Minn. – St. Scholastica pitcher Maggie Schley limited the UW-Superior softball team to just four hits as the Saints shut out the Yellowjackets, 11-0, the opening game for both teams in teh Upper Midwest Athletic Conference softball tournament Thursday.

CSS, which next plays Friday at 12 p.m. against the winner of Northwestern and Bethany Lutheran, scored in four innings, including six runs in fifth.

Bailey Kinnunen (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) collected a pair of hits for the 'Jackets, who face Minnesota Morris Thursday at 4 p.m., in an elimination game.

The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Olivia Howe singled to left, scoring Hannah Thul. Damara Theis (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee) bobbled the ball, allowing Nicole Anders to also score on the play.

Scholastica added two more in the third for a 4-0 lead. Schley doubled to right field to score Thul and, after Howe reached on an error, Josie Fourre's fielder's choice plated Schley.

Trailing, 5-0, Amanda Kishish (St. Francis, Minn./St. Francis) came on to pitch in the top of the fifth inning for Ashley Taipale (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) and was unable to find a rhythm. She did not retire any of the seven batters faced in the inning. Kishish gave up four runs on three hits before Theis ended the inning, inducing three groundballs.

Taipale (7-8) absorbed the loss in the circle for UWS, lasting four innings. She surrendered six hits, five runs (four earned) and two walks. She struck out three.

Schley improved to 12-8 on the season in the complete-game shutout. She walked one and fanned four.
