Barr Pitches ‘Jackets to First Win over Scholastica Since 1991; UWS 2-0 in UMAC Tournament

Story Links

DULUTH, Minn. – Senior right-hander Braeden Barr (San Diego, Calif./Grossmont) threw the Yellowjackets' second complete game of the day, limiting top-seeded St. Scholastica to eight hits as the No.-4 seed UW-Superior baseball team topped the Saints, 6-3, in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday.

UWS (17-20), which received a complete-game win from Auggie Anderson (Mendota Heights, Minn./Henry Sibley) in an elimination-game victory against Crown to start the tournament Thursday, will face No. 2 Bethany Lutheran at 4 p.m., Friday.

Superior's victory over CSS is the first in the series since 1991, when the 'Jackets topped their bridge rivals, 6-5, to close that season.

Barr (3-2) allowed just two earned runs and three walks, while striking out six in throwing 138 pitches. At the plate, he was 2-for-5 – the only UWS player with multiple hits on the night.

Superior never trailed in the contest, scoring two runs in the first, three in the fourth and one in the seventh.

The 'Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Jordan Berrios (Watertown, Minn./Watertown-Mayer) collected an infield hit to third base to lead off the game and was sacrificed to second by Alex Osness (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West). Cory Albertson (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) then stung an offering from CSS starter Jake Sande (7-3) over the fence in left-center field for his seventh home run of the season.

The Saints pulled a run back in the bottom of the inning. Brad Fossum started the frame with a single to right center. With Conor Wollenzien batting and one out, Fossum stole second and moved to third when Albertson's throw from behind the plate ended up in center field.

Wollenzien then lifted a pitch to right field, chasing Fossum home to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The 'Jackets opened a 5-1 advantage in the fourth. Travis Miller (Whittier, Calif./La Serna) beat out a roller to third to find his way aboard and start the rally. Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater) followed with a bunt single before a balk by Sande advanced the runners to second and third. Bryce Flanagan (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) walked to load the bases with no one out. After a strikeout, Berrios tapped a pitch back to Sande. The pitcher's toss to the plate was wild, allowing two runs to score on the play and Berrios to end up on second.

Osness then hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Flanagan for the four-run edge.

Barr allowed one St. Scholastica run in the fifth on a two-out Wollenzie single to left that plated Fossum. But he averted further trouble, getting a bases-loaded strikeout of Eric Pearson to end the threat, keeping the 5-2 lead.

The team's traded runs in the top of the seventh and bottom of the eighth, respectively, for the final margin.

Fossum led CSS, going 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and a stolen base, from the top of the order. Sande went the first four innings on the mound for the Saints, allowing five hits, five runs (two earned) and three walks with one strikeout. Grant Taival threw the final five frames, scattering four hits, one run and one walk, fanning four.

St. Scholastica (24-13) faces No. 3 Northwestern at 1 p.m. on Friday in an elimination game.
