Madison Gutekunst (Mound, Minn./Mound Westonka) made five saves, but Austin scored three times in 18 minutes for a 3-1 victory at Pierce Memorial Soccer Complex Friday.
UWS (0-1) held the Kangaroos scoreless for more than half of the opening 45 minutes, before Austin's Lina Cruz finished a cross from Mac Kersey in the box for a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute.
Just over six minutes later, the 'Roos (1-0) doubled the lead. Chloe Towler got on the end of a free kick from Kristi Stevens and put in the net in the 34th minute.
Four minutes into the second half, Cruz added her second of the night. She chipped the ball over Gutekunst for the goal, assisted by Shelby Smith.
Gaffney got the 'Jackets on the scoreboard 12 minutes later as the ball bounced around in the box. Gaffney was able to find and corral it to knock it home.
UWS was outshot, 19-5, including by an 8-3 count on frame, but held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks for the game.
UWS next travels to Irving, Texas, Sunday to take on Howard Payne at University of Dallas Soccer Stadium kickoff is slated for 11:30 a.m.
