SUPERIOR, Wis. – In a clash of teams ranked in the United Soccer Coaches North Regional rankings, the UW-Superior men's soccer team and St. Norbert played to a 1-1 draw.
UWS entered the match No. 4 in the region while St. Norbert ranked ninth and it showed. A physical encounter, the match featured 16 fouls and nine cards. The Yellowjackets played the final 28 minutes with 10 players when
Mason Tynsky (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall) received his second yellow card of the day in the 82nd minute.
Trailing, 1-0, in the 61st, Superior equalized through
Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka). Tynsky started the play with a long throw in. The ball bounced in the 6-yard box and Perry directed it on a half volley off the far post and in and past St. Norbert goalkeeper Josh Koleske. It was the third goal of the season for Perry.
St. Norbert had a chance to retake the lead in the 70th minute when
Jefri Damas (Fridley, Minn./Fridley) was whistled for a foul in the box, but Brandon DiOrio pushed his penalty kick wide.
Superior took a defensive posture in the latter stages of the contest, leading to a 15-9 advantage in shots for St. Norbert, which also led in corner kicks, 6-2.
SNC got on the scoreboard first on a fortuitous bounce in the 11th minute. Sam Boldt hit a cross intended for Max Censky. The ball, instead, glanced off UWS midfielder
Felix Blick's (Linkoping, Sweden/Katedralskolan) head and into the net.
The 'Jackets' best opportunity to tie the match before halftime came in the 37th minute. Freshman Sam Waylee took a shot that Koleske stopped but the rebound was followed up by Waylee. His second shot was also turned away.
With the draw, both teams move to 4-1-1 on the season. Goalkeeper
Dalton VonKaenel (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) made five saves for the Yellowjackets and Koleske came up with three for the Green Knights.
Superior is back in action Sunday at 1 p.m., hosting Concordia (Minn.) at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
