Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior volleyball team won a pair of matches Saturday to close the Subway Stinger Classic at 3-1 overall.

The Yellowjackets topped both Nebraska Wesleyan and Crown in four sets to improve to 4-5 on the season. UWS beat Nebraska Wesleyan (6-2), 25-22, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15. Superior rallied to beat Crown (2-4) after dropping the first set, 25-22. The 'Jackets won the next three sets, by 25-18 counts.

Against Nebraska Wesleyan, Cami Sletta (Willmar, Minn./Willmar Senior) and Brylee Colligan (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) – Superior's two all-tournament team selections – had 17 and 10 kills, respectively. Sletta hit .316 with two blocks and two digs in the match. Colligan added 12 digs for a double-double. As a team, UWS collected 14 blocks.

In the first set, UWS jumped out to a 6-1 advantage, a stretch punctuated by a Sletta kill, assisted by Hailey Atwood (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake). After the Prairie Wolves cut the lead to 7-4, the 'Jackets reeled off of the next nine points, opening a 14-5 edge. A.J. Runck (Annandale, Minn./Apple Valley) and Colligan ended the run with a block of a Maisie Ohlrich attack.

NWU whittled the lead back to 15-12 with a 6-0 run later in the set, but never got closer than two points as UWS earned the set.

With the match tied at 1-1, the 'Jackets trailed by as many as five points in the third before engineering a comeback in the middle of the set.

Coming out of a timeout down, 16-11, a block from Goggleye and Gina Baertsch (Farmington, Minn./Farmington Area) gave UWS momentum. Trailing, 18-17, a three NWU errors and a Baertsch ace forced an NWU timeout.

Up, 20-18, the 'Jackets held on to win the set, though NWU knotted it at 23-23. A Sletta kill and error by NWU gave UWS a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Jackets led by eight points in the final set, benefitting from eight errors from the Prairie Wolves. The final two points of the match came on an attack error by Nicole Gonzalez and bad set from Leah Sommer.

Whitney Jensen earned a spot on the all-tournament team for NWU with 19 kills and eight digs.

Against Crown, Baertsch tallied the 'Jackets' second triple-double of the season with 10 kills, 16 assists and 14 digs. Sletta and Colligan were the other two with double-digit kills with 19 and 11. Colligan added 20 digs for her second double-double of the day. Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) (14), Elise Ertl (Phillips, Wis./Phillips) (12) and Payton Scherber (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville Senior) (10) landed in double figures in digs.
