SUPERIOR, Wis: The 2019-20 season is turning into a memorable campaign for the Yellowjacket men's hockey team.
After Friday night, the Yellowjackets surpassed their win total for all of last season (10). It was also their seventh win on home ice, the most victories they've had at Wessman Arena since 2012.
Saturday night they also had a chance to extend their unbeaten streak. Standing in the way was a Concordia College team that entered play coming off a 2-2 tie at Northland Friday night.
Â
Courtesy of another big first period, the Yellowjackets pulled away from Concordia early and skated to a 5-1 victory at Wessman Arena.
Â
With the win, the Yellowjackets (12-2-1, 5-2-0 WIAC) are now unbeaten in seven straight games (6-0-1), the program's longest such streak since a 7-0-1 stretch from November 6 through December 4, 2009.
Â
The scoring once again started early for the Yellowjackets. Just 3:55 into the game
Will Blake (Champlin, Minn./Breck) took the puck along the end boards and centered to
Pavel Mikhasenok (Yekaterinburg, Russia/Everest Academy) who buried his third goal of the year to make it 1-0.
Â
Less than two minutes later the 'Jackets extended the lead.
Conor MacLean (Wilcox, Saskatchewan/Athol Murray College of Notre Dame), who scored his first collegiate goal Friday, picked up his second at 5:37. MacLean blocked a shot and then chased down the puck, went in on the breakaway and lifted a shot into the top corner to make it 2-0.
Â
MacLean would score his second of the night just 1:26 into the second period, taking a brilliant feed in front from
Chad Lopez (Arlington, Texas/University of Texas) and rifling a shot past Concordia goaltender Jacob Stephan to push the lead to 3-0.
Â
Each team was down a skater when the Yellowjackets pulled ahead 4-0.
Troy York (Plano, Texas/West) started the play, taking out the Concordia defenseman behind the goal, retrieving the puck and centering to
Artur Terchiyev (Kiev, Ukraine/Everst Academy). The sophomore defenseman took his time, picked his spot, and scored his fourth of the year from the left circle at 3:14.
Â
The Cobbers would get on the board with a power play goal at 5:18 of the second. Aaron Herdt scored a beautiful goal, wristing a shot from the right circle past Yellowjacket goaltender
Myles Hektor (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest) to cut into the lead.
There would be no more scoring until the final minute of the game when MacLean would send the puck down the ice into the Concordia zone.
Alec MacKenzie (Ottawa, Ontario/École Secondaire Garneau) would win the race to the puck to nullify the icing call, and center to Mikhasenok who scored his second of the night into the empty net, making the final score 5-1.
Â
MacLean led the offensive charge, finishing the night with two goals and an assist. Mikhasenok and Lopez also had multi-point nights for the Yellowjackets.
Â
Hektor continued his strong play in goal, earning the win with a 27-save performance. He is now 4-0-1 on the year. At the other end Stephan took the loss for Concordia, making 35 saves in the process.
Â
The Yellowjackets have now opened the scoring 12 times in 15 games, and they've emerged victorious each time they get the game's first goal. Saturday night was also the seventh time this season the Yellowjackets reached the 40-shot mark, and they've fashioned a 6-0-1 record in those contests.
After playing at home in 10 of the first 15 games, the Yellowjackets will now see more time on the road. Seven of the final 10 games in the regular season will be played away from Wessman Arena, beginning with next weekend's games at Gustavus and St. Thomas, the final non-conference games of the 2019-20 season.
