MINNEAPOLIS – Mikayla Jones scored two goals as Augsburg snapped the UW-Superior women's hockey team's six-game winning streak with a 4-1 victory at Ed Saugstad Rink Saturday.
The Yellowjackets came into the game riding high after the upset of fourth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus Friday, while the Auggies were looking to bounce back from a defeat at No. 8 UW-River Falls.
Augsburg (8-4-0) led, 2-0, after one period. Jones opened the scoring at 7:50 of the frame, tapping home the rebound of an Ellie Tabaka shot past a sprawled
Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy). The Auggies doubled the lead as Bridget Wagner blocked a blast from the point from
Lauren Niska (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria Area) on a UWS power play. She picked the puck up in the neutral zone and streaked down the left side, ripping a shot high glove on Johnson at 11:31.
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) cut the lead in half at 13:20 of the second period for the 'Jackets on the power play. She tucked in the rebound of a
Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) shot in front at 13:20, giving her team momentum. But it didn't last long as Jones responded with her second of the game at 18:52 – again assisted by Tabaka, as well as Jeanette Bealke – to restore the two-goal edge.
On the play, Jones used her speed to race down the wing and toe-drag a defender before beating Johnson to the far post.
Katie Flynn added the Auggies' fourth goal at 12:58 of the third for the final margin from Hollywood Hermanson.
Abby Bolling made 17 saves for Augsburg, while Johnson was solid in the Superior net, stopping 24.
The 'Jackets went 1-for-6 on the power play and the Auggies with scoreless in four chances.
UWS (8-2-1) is back in action Tuesday at 7 p.m., hosting Bethel.
