Big Second-Half Run Puts Morris Away in 89-63 UWS Win

SUPERIOR, Wis. – Senior Mac Reykdal (Washburn, Wis./Washburn) scored a game-high 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including 6-for-10 from 3-point range, to lead the UW-Superior men's basketball team to an 89-63 win over Minnesota Morris at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Sunday. 
 
Classmate Vid Milenkovic (Zurich, Switzerland/DSB Belgrade (Serbia)) added 20 points and six rebounds, three assists and three steals as the Yellowjackets improved to 10-6 overall and 7-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Freshman Mason Ackley (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) chipped in with 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while senior Allen Anderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Osseo) had 13 points, four boards and four assists.
 
UWS led by just six points, 39-33, at halftime, but held the Cougars scoreless for 5:49 to begin the second half, opening a 59-33 advantage and cruised from there. Four different players scored in the decisive 20-point run. Anderson and Reykdal each scored six in the spurt, with Reykdal punctuating it with consecutive treys. Ackley, who had five in the skein, also added an explosive breakaway dunk off of a Reykdal steal and assist.
 
In all, 11 of the 18 'Jackets to see the floor scored points. UWS shot 51.5 percent from the field (35-for-68), including 57.1 percent in the second half (20-for-35). Superior had 20 assists on 35 baskets on the day.
 
The teams traded hoops in the early going until 10-10. Then, the 'Jackets engineered a 10-0 run take a 20-10 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half. Milenkovic sparked the run with one of his three 3-pointers with 13:31 remaining in the half, and Reykdal closed it with a steal and layup.
 
Minnesota Morris (4-11, 1-6 UMAC) rallied to cut the deficit to 22-20 on a Camden Talley jumper in the paint at the 8:17 mark, but UWS responded with a 9-2 stretch making it 31-22 with 5:33 left in the period.
 
Superior led by as many as 35 points two times in the second half, the last of which came at 77-42 with 9:26 left on Joan Giner's (Tenerife, Spain/IES Mayor Bernabé Rodríguez) offensive rebound and putback of Josef Fahrenholtz's (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) missed a 3-pointer.
 
Morris was led by Ian Carlin with 12 points and five rebounds.
 
The 'Jackets return to action Wednesday at Northwestern at 5:30 p.m.
