Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) and senior
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park) scored two goals apiece and sophomore goaltender
Maddy Gamst (Moose Lake, Minn./Moose Lake Area) earned his first collegiate victory as the UW-Superior women's hockey team skated to a 6-1 win over Finlandia at Wessman Arena Friday.
The Yellowjackets scored three times in the first period, once in the second and twice in the third, posting a season-high 60 shots on goal in the win. Gamst made seven saves in the victory. All three UWS goalies now have at least one victory on the season as the 'Jackets improved to 11-5-1 overall, while dropping the Lions to 0-17-0.
Martinson opened the scoring just 3:31 into the game on an assist from junior
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island). Curtis made it 2-0 19 seconds later on a feed from sophomore
C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances). Martinson scored her 16th goal of the season at 11:29 shorthanded and unassisted.
Martinson is currently fifth in NCAA Division III, averaging 0.94 goals per game.
Finlandia cut into the lead as Brenna Ceglar scored at 5:04 of the second period from Kylee Hopp, but freshman
Cassie McClure (Duluth, Minn./Denfield) answered 1:45 later. Shelton and
Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) assisted on McClure's third goal of the year.
Curtis stuck on the power play 1:28 into the third period, making it a 5-1 game. Her sixth goal of the season was assisted by
Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln).
Freshman
Ashley Schintz (Isanti, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) accounted for the final margin, scoring at 18:35 from
Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park), for her fourth goal.
Finlandia goalie Sarah Gundry stopped 54 shots, including 26 in the first period, in the loss. It marked the first time Superior fired at least 60 shots in a game since it had 63 in a 7-0 home win against the Lions Dec. 7, 2018.
The 'Jackets cashed in on their only power-play chance of the night, while the Lions were 0-for-3 with the extra skater.
The teams close their weekend series with a 2 p.m., faceoff at Wessman Arena Saturday.
