Babaya's Late Goal Lifts Built Different to 2-1 Win

10/23/2020 7:26:00 PM

SUPERIOR, Wis. – One thing has become apparent as the fall season has unfolded for the Yellowjacket men's soccer team – offense doesn't seem to be an issue.

Through the first four matches of the Superior Super Series, teams Built Different and Earn It have combined for at least six goals. Each team posted a 4-2 victory to start the series before Built Different exploded for an 8-0 win. Then last Saturday, the teams combined for 10 goals in a 5-5 draw to open the best-of-three playoff series.

Friday night was a different story, however, with defense being the name of the game. It was the tightest-played, most-tactical match yet, and it took some late heroics to decide a winner.

Protus Babaya (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) scored with just over four minutes to play, helping Built Different come from behind to defeat Earn It 2-1 at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

Babaya worked the ball through traffic at the top of the 18, got close to the goal and sent a rocket past Earn It starting goalkeeper Cole Bergman (Hayward, Wis./Hayward) with just 4:09 to play in regulation. Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) started the play with a brilliant pass to Babaya.

Earn It opened the scoring in the 36th minute of the match when Jefri Damas (Fridley, Minn./Fridley) made it 1-0. Damas converted a shot with the right foot from in tight, sneaking it past goalkeeper Ulrik Lager (Vollen, Norway/Asker VGS) on the lower right side. Sam Waylee Jr. (Abidjan, Ivory Coast/Morning Glory International School) had the assist.

It stayed that way through halftime and into the second half, but as the match wore on Built Different began to assert itself. The team in the dark jerseys pushed the play in the second half and eventually drew even in the 57th minute. Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) and Brandon Conklin (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) worked the ball through traffic and got it to the right side of the box where Carter Tess (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack) picked it up, and with his right foot put it past Bergman to tie the match 1-1.

Lager earned the win in the match for Built Different, while Bergman had a strong match at the other end in the loss for Earn It.

The teams will play their final match of the Super Series Friday, October 30. The opening kickoff will happen at 7:00 p.m. at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex in Superior.
