SUPERIOR, Wis. – So far this fall, the matches of the 2020 Super Series for the Yellowjacket volleyball team have been characterized by long rallied and even longer sets. All of that went by the boards Saturday afternoon, as Team Black and Team Yellow completed their match in a snappy 70 minutes.
Â
And for the third time this fall Yellow emerged victorious, posting the first sweep of the Super Series. Yellow made quick work of Black, winning 25-18, 30-28, 25-16.
Â
Yellow now has a 3-1 lead in matches played, with two more matches to go before the teams enter the playoff portion of their fall schedule.
Â
In a harbinger of things to come, Yellow took the first three points of the match, but Black came back and tied the set 5-5. Yellow would pull away, however, moving ahead 15-9 before Black called timeout and stalled the momentum.
Â
Holding serve proved difficult until Yellow won three straight points on the serve of
Hailey Atwood (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake), to push its advantage to 20-11 and put the set out of reach.
Maddy Cabe (Ashland, Wis./Ashland) posted the final point of the set, giving Yellow the 25-16 win.
Â
Black came out strong in the second set, building a 9-3 lead, and giving the appearance the match could potentially be another five-set marathon. Yellow called a timeout, and flipping the script from the opening set, stalled the momentum of Black, and in the process began to crawl back into the game. For the second game in a row Atwood was big at the service line, serving her team to eight points.
Â
Yellow made it all the way back, tying things at 22-22. The teams traded points and moved into extras, but Atwood served out the winner, giving Yellow the set 30-28 and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Â
The third set followed much the same script as the first, with the teams struggling to hold serve. Trading points early, the game was tied 5-5 until Yellow began to pull away. Yellow went on a 6-0 run with
Megan Taylor (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) serving to move ahead 14-6. From there the teams continued to trade points and Yellow closed it out, winning 25-16 and taking the match 3-0.
Â
Cabe finished with a match-high 15 kills, while
Kielan LaPlante (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) added 12.
Kaylee Iverson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia) added nine to pace Yellow offensively.
Â
Savanna Renderman (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) and
Elise Ertl (Phillips, Wis./Phillips) had 13 and eight kills, respectively, to lead Black.
Â
Team Black and Team Yellow will return to the court Wednesday, October 28. The opening serve from Mertz Mortorelli Gym is set for 7:00 p.m.
