Story Links

DULUTH, Minn. – Senior Eva Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Homeschooled) scored a career-high 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season to lead the UW-Superior women's basketball team to a 73-54 victory over St. Scholastica at Reif Gym Wednesday.

Reinertsen shot 12-for-18 from the field and 4-of-4 from the free-throw line with two assists, two steals and a blocked shot to help the Yellowjackets improve to 15-7 and 11-2 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Classmate Emily Carpenter (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) added 16 points, four steals and two assists as UWS completed a season sweep of the Saints (9-14, 7-7 UMAC).

Senior Marissa Ruiz (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) chipped in with nine points, four steals and two assists, as well. Freshman Mady Sanders (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and senior Mackenzie Kmecik (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) ripped down nine and eight boards, respectively – both career bests – as UWS earned a plus-16 margin on the glass for the game. Sanders also added six points, just two off her season high.

Superior built a 19-8 advantage after one quarter and led, 38-23, at halftime. St. Scholastica outscored UWS by six in the third quarter, giving the host life heading into the final 10 minutes. But the 'Jackets left no doubt in the end, with a 22-point final stanza.

The 'Jackets forced 25 CSS turnovers, converting them into 32 points, spurring the wire-to-wire win.

Superior was off and running, closing the first quarter on with an 11-1 run over the final four minutes. Mikayla Koivisto (Floodwood, Minn./Floodwood), Reinertsen, Ruiz, Destiny Haldeman (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie) and Sanders all contributed scoring to the rally.

The lead grew to as many as 20 in the second quarter at 34-14. Koivisto stripped Christina Furey of the ball and fed Ruiz for a 3-pointer with 3:31 left. Koivisto did it again on the next trip, this time to Emma Schmidt. She found Reinertsen, who then fed Sanders for a layup.

The Saints battled their way to within 51-42 at the end of the third on a Kaylee Kennedy offensive rebound and basket, but the 'Jackets poured it on the fourth quarter.

Five players scored in the final period with Reinertsen adding 10.

Kennedy led the Saints with 17 points on the night, while Karli Skog added 13; Schmidt and Furey had six rebounds apiece.

UWS returns home Saturday to take on Martin Luther at Mertz Mortorelli Gym at 4:45 p.m.
