ASHLAND, Wis. – When the Yellowjacket women's hockey team needs offense, they turn to
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park). Throughout her career, Martinson has been a consistent scorer, and her 64 career goals rank her second all-time in program history.
Â
Friday night at Northland, she scored the first three goals of the game to help the Yellowjackets to a 5-1 victory over the Lumberjills. She also had an assist in the contest. What could she possibly do for an encore?
Â
Saturday Martinson scored the first two goals of the game for the Yellowjackets, and added a pair of assists as the Yellojackets once again rolled past Northland by a 5-1 score at the Bay Area Civic Center.
Â
With the four-point game, Martinson reached the 100-point mark for her career. She is just the third player in program history to rack up 100 points, trailing Dani Schultz (116) and Erin Kegley (161).
Â
Not to be outdone on the weekend was fellow senior
Molly Shelton (Pine Island, Minn./Pine Island). Like Martinson, Shelton had a four-point game Friday night, and followed that up with a three-point game Saturday, giving her seven for the weekend.
Â
Martinson opened the scoring for the Yellowjackets, picking up her 24th goal of the year from Shelton and
Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) on a power play just 4:42 into the first period.
Â
It stayed that way until 13:58 of the second period when Martinson scored her second of the game, this time getting an assist from
Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) to make it 2-0.
Â
Northland answered just 1:31 into the third period, cutting the Yellowjacket lead in half, but the 'Jackets answered just over a minute later on a goal by
Cassie McClure (Duluth, Minn./Denfield). Shelton would add the exclamation points later in the third, scoring her fourth of the year from Martinson at 10:51 to make it 4-1. Shelton closed out the scoring with seven minutes to play in the game, netting her second of the game from Martinson and
Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) on the power play to make the final 5-1.
Â
For the game the Yellowjackets outshot Northland 43-28.
Â
McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) got the start in goal and earned the victory, improving her record to 8-2-0 on the year. She made 27 stops. At the other end Aubrielle Champagne got the start and made three saves before being relieved by Gabby Suhr. Suhr made 35 saves, but took the loss for the Lumberjills.
Â
Next up for the Yellowjackets (17-7-1, 7-5-0 WIAC) is a WIAC semifinal series on the road at UW-River Falls. Games will be at Hunt Arena Friday, February 28 and Saturday, February 29. Start times are to be determined. The teams met three times during the regular season. The 'Jackets lost the only meeting of the year in River Falls 4-3 on January 23. They were on the right side of a 2-1 decision at Wessman Arena January 25, but River Falls won the rubber match 3-0 February 8.
