RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's hockey team's season came to an end Saturday with a 2-2 tie in Game 2 of the WIAC semifinals against sixth-ranked UW-River Falls at Hunt Arena.
Â
The Yellowjackets erased a 2-0 deficit, but couldn't find the go-ahead goal late in regulation and overtime to extend the series. The Falcons (20-5-2) advance to the WIAC championship game at UW-Eau Claire next Saturday. The 'Jackets' season comes to a close at 17-8-2 overall.
Â
UWS got on the scoreboard at 12:40 of the second period when
Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) beat River Falls goaltender Sami Miller off of an assist from
Kaleigh Martinson (Dayton, Minn./Champlin Park). The pair teamed up again at 6:50 of the third to tie the game. This time, Martinson found space over Miller's shoulder for the equalizer – her league-leading 26th goal of the season.
Â
Superior managed only four shots on goal the rest of the period, while River Falls peppered
Catherine Johnson (Lakeville, Minn./St. Paul Academy) with 12 – all of which she turned away – setting the stage for overtime.Â
Â
The 'Jackets benefitted from a cross-checking penalty to Bella Wagner just 22 seconds into the extra session, but were unable to take advantage of the power-play opportunity. Miller made three saves on the kill.
Â
Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) then took a checking minor with 1:50 remaining and Superior couldn't muster any offense the rest of the way.
Â
Callie Hoff opened the scoring for UWRF at 18:18 of the first period with an unassisted goal, charging down the slot to beat Johnson with a wrister. Alyson Niebur doubled the lead at 10:34 of the second with assists from Kathryn Larson and Kiana Gilbraith.
Â
Johnson made 30 saves in the Superior net while Miller turned aside 26 for the Falcons.
