SUPERIOR, Wis. – Three players scored in double figures as the UW-Superior women's basketball team opened the 2020-21 season with an 88-59 non-conference win against Northland at Mertz Mortorelli Gym Wednesday.
Senior
Ellie Leadstrom (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) scored 22 points on 9-for-17 shoot, adding six rebounds and two assists, while sophomore
Kaija Davies (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) tallied 19 points, seven boards and two assists. Classmate
Kaelyn Christian (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville Senior) contributed 16 points, grabbed seven boards and dished five assists in the win.
The Yellowjackets led throughout the night, shooting over 45 percent from the field. Ten of the 12 UWS players dressed scored points as the 'Jackets registered over 20 points in three separate quarters.
UWS used a 21-point second period to lengthen a 27-21 advantage after one to 48-31 at halftime and never looked back. The 'Jackets dominated inside, outscoring the visitors 42-18 in the paint and 25-5 on second chances with the help of a 17-11 edge on the offensive glass. In all, UWS held a 48-35 rebounding margin.
Sophomore
Mady Sanders (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) and freshman
Bryton Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) each chipped in with seven points off the bench as the reserves recorded 22 points on the night.
The LumberJills connected on just 18-of-60 shots from the floor for the game for 30 percent and were paced by Rainiya White and Miranda Wagner with 20 points apiece. Bailey Wynn corralled a game-high eight rebounds in a losing effort.
UWS begins UMAC play Saturday, hosting Martin Luther at 3 p.m.
