ASHLAND, Wis. – Four players tallied double figures in kills and junior
Cassy Teff (Foley, Minn./Foley) notched her fourth triple-double of the season as the UW-Superior volleyball team finished a three-match season series sweep of Northland with a 3-1 victory at Kendrigan Gym on Tuesday.
Â
The Yellowjackets, who won by set scores of 25-15, 18-25, 26-24 and 25-13, powered their way to 59 kills and a .246 attack efficiency. Teff registered a match-high-tying 15 kills, adding 15 assists and 13 digs, while sophomore
Kaylin Plautz (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) (13), freshman
Maiana Stark (Germantown, Wis./Germantown) (11) and junior
Alexie Pryd (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove Senior) (10) also had double digits.
Â
Superior, which improved to 7-13 overall and 5-3 in the UMAC, led in kills, 59-43, digs, 97-84, blocks, 8-3, and assists, 53-43. Northland fell to 4-13 overall and 1-7 in league matches with the loss.
Â
UWS took the lead for good in the first set with a four-point spurt that gave it a 16-13 advantage when Teff put down a kill. Two points later, a swing by Northland's Larissa Fossum cut the edge to 17-15, but the 'Jackets closed the set on an 8-0 run. That stretch featured two kills from Stark and one each from Pryd,
Jordyn O'Brien (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and Teff to go with a
Jenna Anderson (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) service ace. O'Brien and Stark combined on a block to end the set and give their team the 10-point victory.
Â
Northland used an eight-point run of its own in the middle of the second set for a 15-7 edge and did not look back in trying the match.Â
Â
Superior erased a 21-13 deficit in the third set, scoring six of the next seven points to whittle the lead to 22-19. The 'Jackets then fought off four set points, tying things at 24-all with the help of a Northland error. Kills from O'Brien and Stark on the next two points gave the set to UWS.
Â
The Yellowjackets left little doubt in the fourth set, hitting a match-best .438 with 16 kills and just two errors in 32 total attacks. UWS sealed the victory by winning the last eight points on five kills, an ace, a block and Northland error.
Â
Fossum paced the LumberJills with 15 kills while Alexa Zadra chipped in with 25 digs.
Â
The 'Jackets next host Bethany Lutheran Friday at 7 p.m., at Mertz Mortorelli Gym.
