Babaya Double Rescues Yellowjackets for 3-2 Victory at Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior Protus Babaya (Elk River, Minn./Elk River) scored two goals after halftime, including the game-winning header in the second extra-time period to lift the UW-Superior men's soccer team to a 3-2 win over Northwestern in UMAC action at Reynolds Field on Friday.

On the winning play, Babaya flicked a Josh Bellamy (High Wycombe, England/FAB Football Academy) service back across the face of goal, off the far post and in, for the victory in the 104th minute.

The goal, Babaya's team-leading 10th of the season, ended a second half that saw the Yellowjackets apply relentless pressure to the Eagles with 16 of their 26 shots after the halftime interval.

Babaya pulled Superior (6-6-0, 6-1-0 UMAC) level, burying a penalty kick in the 72nd minute. Senior Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) was tripped up in the box, creating the chance. Babaya made no mistake, getting Northwestern goalkeeper Austin Gunkel to guess wrong before putting it away.

Down 2-0 with the first half winding down, UWS cut the lead in half. Senior Blake Hanson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) found his brother, sophomore Alex Hanson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) with a cross at the near post with Alex nodding the ball home past Gunkel in the 43rd minute for his first career goal.

Northwestern (3-5-1, 2-3-1) made it 2-0 as Samuel Hendry cut to his left foot in the box and beat Alex Paredes (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) low in inside the post in the 40th minute. Jonathan-Thomas Olsen picked up an assist on the play. UNW scored first through Koby Wesselink in the 14th minute from Luke McCann.

Paredes improved to 6-4-0, making five saves. Gunkel fell to 4-10-0 with 13 saves in the loss.

The Yellowjackets put 17 shots on frame while UNW had seven. Superior led in corner kicks, 13-2.

UWS next heads to North Central Saturday. Kickoff at Elliot Park Field in Minneapolis is set for 1 p.m.
