Wilson, Lang Lead Yellowjackets to Shutout at Northwestern

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore Niya Wilson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) scored a goal and an assist and freshman goalkeeper Jenna Lang (Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial) made 10 saves as the UW-Superior women's soccer team blanked Northwestern, 3-0, at Reynolds Field on Friday.

With the win, the Yellowjackets' first in the all-time series since a 2-0 victory Sept. 16, 1997, UWS improves to 8-3-0 overall and 6-0-0 in the UMAC while handing the Eagles their first conference loss, dropping UNW to 5-5-0 and 5-1-0 in the league.

Superior opened the scoring in the 16th minute with an own goal in what proved to be its only shot of the opening half. Lang made four saves in the period, including stops on Megan Moeller in the first and 18th minutes, RJ Mullin in the second and Kaylin Strike in the third minute.

Senior Annah Schussman (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) scored her fifth goal of the season in the 53rd minute from Wilson and freshman Ava Giswold (Duluth, Minn./Proctor) for a two-goal cushion before Wilson put the match away with her league-leading 14th goal of the season on a scramble in front of the net in the 71st minute.

The Eagles outshout UWS, 14-7 overall, and by a 10-4 margin in shots on frame. The 'Jackets held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Lang earned her second solo clean sheet of the season, moving to 7-2-0 in the Superior net. Ellie Fryer made two saves for UNW in the loss. She fell to 8-6-0 on the season.

UWS returns to action hosting Northland Tuesday at NBC Sparta Sports Complex. Kickoff is 2 p.m.
