J'Vaun Walker (Rosharon, Texas/Manvel) scored 20 points on 7-for-10 shooting and junior
Enrique Sanchez (Madrid, Spain/IES María Guerrero) added 10 as the UW-Superior men's basketball team defeated Concordia (Minn.), 63-58, at Memorial Auditorium on Saturday.
The Yellowjackets never trailed after Sanchez knocked down a jumper midway through the first half for a 12-9 lead. UWS built its largest lead of the game at 25-11 with 5:01 remaining the half when
Jayden Fitch (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek) gathered the rebound of a
Bora Yilmaz (Istanbul, Turkey/The Knox School (N.Y.)) miss and put it back up and in. Superior led, 31-22, at the break.
Concordia's Grant Pederson hit a 3-pointer off of an assist from Charlie Rasmussen to cut the Cobbers' deficit to six at 45-39 with 12:09 remaining. Walker pushed the lead to double digits at 53-43 with 4:34 to play before Concordia rallied to make it a 61-56 on a three-point play from Braeton Motschenbach with 21 seconds to go but the 'Jackets held on for the victory.
Superior (2-3) shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) for the game while Concordia was 22-of-48. Each team collected 31 rebounds with the 'Jackets leading 24-16 on the defensive glass.
Junior
Mason Ackley (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) chipped in with nine points and a team-high-tying six boards.
Josef Fahrenholtz (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) also grabbed six rebounds for UWS.
Motschenbach paced the Cobbers (1-4) with 15 points, leading three Concordia players in double figures. He also had five rebounds and two assists.
The Yellowjackets return to action next Saturday in an exhibition contest at Division-I Green Bay. Tip-off at the Kress Center is set for 6 p.m., and will be available on ESPN+ and the WatchESPN app.
