SUPERIOR, Wis. – Freshman
Josh Bellamy (High Wycombe, England/FAB Football Academy) scored just 10 seconds into overtime to lift the UW-Superior men's soccer team to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Bethany Lutheran in the 2021 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference championship match Saturday at NBC Spartan Sports Complex.
Bellamy finished a cross on the right side from
Blake Perry (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) to give the Yellowjackets their fifth consecutive UMAC title. UWS (16-6-0) will learn its NCAA tournament destination Monday at 12:30 central time on NCAA.com.
Bellamy's sixth goal of the season put an end to a tightly contested, physical match that saw Superior play a man down for the final eight minutes after freshman goalkeeper
Alex Paredes (Mequon, Wis./Homestead) was issued a red card while making a play on a ball.
Senior goalkeeper
Payton Anderson (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing) came in and punched aside the ensuing penalty kick from the Vikings' Julio Castanon to keep the match knotted at 1-1.
Bethany Lutheran got on the scoreboard first just 37 seconds into the match as Aidan Whitcomb beat Paredes from the top of the box on a header off of a throw in from Cameron Brookfield.
Senior forward
Blake Doyea (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka) scored the equalizer in the 20th minute when he completed a nifty one-touch passing play with Perry to beat goalie Nick Lundberg low on the left.
The Vikings outshot the Yellowjackets, 20-15, but UWS led in shots on target, 10-7, Paredes made five saves before exiting. Anderson earned his first win of the season, improving 1-2-0.
Perry assisted both goals in the championship win and had a goal and two assists in the semifinal to earn him tournament MVP honors.
The Vikings' seasons ends at 14-7-0 overall.
