SUPERIOR, Wis. – Junior
Eli Vogel (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) scored 22 points and drained 6-of-10 from 3-point range as the UW-Superior men's basketball team dismantled Martin Luther, 85-46, on Saturday at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium.
The Yellowjackets went 11-for-28 from distance, including dropping nine from beyond the arc in the second half, in the wire-to-wire win.
UWS (3-6, 1-1 UMAC) placed four players in double figures as starters
J'Vaun Walker (Rosharon, Texas/Manvel) (14 points) and
Josef Fahrenholtz (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) (11) joined Vogel in double digits. Freshman
Reid Johnson (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) came off the bench for 10 points in 10 minutes on the strength of 4-of-8 shooting and a pair of treys.

Superior ran out to a 19-2 lead in the opening 10 minutes and never looked back. Johnson closed the spurt with a steal and jumper in transition, forcing a Knights' timeout. MLC rallied to slice the deficit to 30-20 on a pair of Jacob Price free throws with three minutes remaining in the first half before whittling it down to eight with an Isaiah Loersch layup a minute later.
Walker responded with a pair of jumpers – the second of which came off of a steal – and Vogel canned a triple, assisted by
Josh Reinertsen (Duluth, Minn./Denfeld), to restore momentum and a 37-22 advantage with 1:07 left.
Superior began the second half with another prolonged run, this one 17 consecutive points, to widen gap further. Vogel hit three 3-pointers in the stretch,
Xavier Patterson (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) connected on one and
T.J. Moberg (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) on another in the first five minutes for a 57-26 lead.
Two Johnson treys and a jumper pushed the lead to the largest of the day at 85-44 with 21 seconds to play.
Enrique Sanchez (Madrid, Spain/IES María Guerrero) had a team-high six of Superior's 37 rebounds while
Mason Ackley (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior) and Patterson each had five of the team's 18 assists.
Jack Heichelbach paced Martin Luther with nine points and a game-high seven boards.
