SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's basketball team used a balanced attack to earn 78-49 victory over Martin Luther at Mertz Mortorelli Gymnasium on Saturday.
The Yellowjackets received scoring contributions from 17 different players and shot 43.5 percent from the field while converting 22 free throws to win going away and snap a five-game losing streak. UWS got at least six points from eight players, led by junior
Kaelyn Christian (St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville Senior) with 13. Freshman
Elise Besonen (Ewen, Mich./Ewen-Trout Creek) and sophomore
Sam Parendo (Proctor, Minn./Proctor) scored nine points apiece.
Martin Luther (2-7, 1-1 UMAC) scored the game's first field goal, but UWS (2-8, 1-1) opened a 26-12 advantage after one period. Superior led, 39-27, at halftime with Christian, Parendo and
Paige Servais (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) scoring seven points each.
Superior distanced itself in the third quarter, outscoring the Knights, 21-6, for a 60-33 advantage heading into the fourth quarter. Christian knocked down a pair from the line 1:07 into the period to give her team its largest lead of the day at 62-33.
UWS scored 22 points off of 27 MLC turnovers and dominated the boards, 48-23, including a 20-8 edge on the offensive glass. The Superior reserves outscored the Knights, 49-25.
Besonen added a game-high-tying seven rebounds and three steals. Senior
Brianna O'Donnell (Richfield, Minn./Richfield) scored eight points and also had seven boards, two steals and two blocks.
UWS now breaks for the holidays before returning to action for a home contest with Finlandia on Wenesday, Dec. 29. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
