Story Links

SUPERIOR, Wis. – The UW-Superior women's hockey team scored seven unanswered goals, including four in the second period, for a 7-1 victory over Northland to open the regular season at Wessman Arena Wednesday.

Five players notched multiple points and Amanda Sergent (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) and Jenna Curtis (Webster, Wis./Webster) scored two goals apiece in the win. The Yellowjackets fired 53 shots and held LumberJills to just 11.

Karadyn Kiviaho put the visitors on the scoreboard first at 16:22 of the opening period, before Tessa Jorde (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) evened things 19:20 from Avery Schwark (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley).

Sergent scored her first of two consecutive goals 3:24 into the second period from Kaylee Wood (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park) and C.C. Hayes (Fort Frances, Ontario/Fort Frances) for the lead. Then, on the penalty kill, Jorde chipped the puck out of the zone, finding Sergent who beat her player and slipped a backhander past Soleil Archambeault (46 saves) to make it 3-1 at 7:31.

Amber Heidenreich (Phillips, Wis./Hayward) added an unassisted tally, picking the pocket of a Northland skater at center ice before finishing off a breakaway at the 12:20 mark. Curtis made it 5-1, finishing a centering pass from behind the net at 15:27 with Megan Dulong (Grand Rapids, Minn./Grand Rapids) also assisting on the play.

The 'Jackets added two more in the third from Hannah Magnusson (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) at 7:39 and Curtis again at 9:29 to close the scoring.

McKenzie Whalen (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks) stopped 9-of-10 shots faced in the UWS net for the victory.

The same two teams close their home-and-home series Saturday at the Bay Area Civic Center in Ashland Saturday at 4 p.m.
