MINNEAPOLIS – The UW-Superior baseball team got its first two victories of the season with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Minnesota Morris Tuesday morning at U.S. Bank Stadium, winning 2-1 and 4-3.
Â
The Yellowjackets (2-4) scored twice in the top of the first inning of the first game, and a cast of four pitchers made the lead stand up. Starter
Elliot Danhoff (Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone) struck out nine – just one fewer than his career high – and allowed one hit in four innings to improve to 1-1.
Â
Kaleb Beane (Tallahassee, Fla./Leon),
Matt Tappe (St. Anthony, Minn./St. Anthony Village) and
Ryan Rodriguez (Chaska, Minn./Chaska) threw the final three innings, respectively, to nail down the win. Rodriguez closed it out, surrendering a hit and a walk with one strikeout, to collect his first career save.
Â
Nick Fredrikson (Minneapolis, Minn./St. Anthony Village) led off the game with a single up the middle off of Cougars' right-hander Brian Vanyo and
Brandon Rolf (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater Area) followed with a double to left field. Then,
Bryce Flanagan (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) hit a roller that was bobbled at third base, allowing both Fredrikson and Rolf to come home for the 2-0 lead.
Â
That's the way it stayed until the bottom of the fifth when, with Beane on the mound and the bases loaded, Tyler Rowland reached on an error that scored Tyler Carper to cut the lead in half. After striking out the first two batters of the inning, Beane gave up consecutive singles and a walk to load the bases, but was able to limit the damage to the one run.
Â
Fredrikson finished game one 1-for-3 with a walk and run scored, while Rolf was 1-for-4 with a walk, stolen base and run.
Christian Garcia (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) and
Iduan Nater (Arecibo, Puerto Rico/Vocacional Antonio Lucchetti) Lopez picked up Superior's other two hits.
Â
David Dibble (Kenosha, Wis./Tremper) (1-0) earned his first career win as a starter on the mound in game two, rebounding from a first-inning run to pitch four strong innings. He scattered five hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out two.
Â
With the game tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the third,
Ryan Castaneda (San Pedro, Calif./Junipero Serra) ripped a one-out double off the wall in right field to score Rolf and Flanagan – who both singled – for a 4-2 lead.
Â
Minnesota Morris (0-2) picked up a run in the top of the sixth with a two-out rally off of Garcia, who was on in relief of Dibble.
Jack Barnett (Jordan, Minn./Jordan) closed the door in the seventh, notching his first save with a pair of strikeouts.
Â
Rolf and
Sam McNosky (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) had two hits apiece for the 'Jackets in the second game, while
Josh Hukriede (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd) added an RBI double and run scored in his three at-bats.
Â
Carper finished 2-for-5 in the doubleheader with a double, two runs scored and one driven in to pace the Morris offense.
