Yellowjackets Complete Sweep of Crown, Move to 5-3 on the Year

DUNDAS, Minn. – The UW-Superior softball team moved above .500 with a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Crown at the Dundas Dome Wednesday.

The Yellowjackets won 5-2 and 11-2 in six innings to complete the sweep and are now 5-3 on the season.

Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) struck out a career-high 11 in the circle and went 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs, a run scored and walk, in game one. Malania Madill (Canyon, Minn./South Ridge) scattered seven hits and one earned run over six innings, picking up her second complete game of the season, while improving to 2-1, in the nightcap.

Olivia Bancroft-Hart (Cambria, Wis./Cambria-Friesland) and Bryton Kukowski (Duluth, Minn./Hermantown) each went 3-for-3 in the second game as part of Superior's 12-hit attack. Bancroft-Hart collected an RBI double, walk and stolen base and scored three times. Kukowski had a single, double, triple, walk, stole two bases and scored a run.

UWS outhit Crown, 8-2, and scored in each of the first four innings of the first game. Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) threw her third complete game of the season, improving to 3-2 overall.

The 'Jackets jumped on Crown pitcher Ashley Earick for two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) led off with a walk and stole second. Bancroft-Hart moved her to third with a ground out to second before Tiffany Kirk (McHenry, Ill./McHenry East) hit a double to left field for the lead.

Next up, Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) hit a double of her own to left, but Kirk was cut down at the plate for the second out. Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights), who had moved to third on the throw home, scored when Kukowski reached on an error at shortstop.

Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) added a run-scoring single to shortstop in the second, scoring Davriana Horvath (Esko, Minn./Esko), who singled to start the frame. Horvath moved to second on a passed ball with one out and was sacrificed to third by Kaileigh Miller (Superior, Wis./Superior Senior).

Crown's Kuulei Ili drove one over the fence in left-center field with two out in the top of the third inning to pull the Storm within a run at 3-2, but Superior tacked on runs in the bottom of the inning and in the fourth for the final margin.

Kukowski lifted a one-out fly ball to center field to chase Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) in from third in the bottom of the third to make it 4-2. Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) then singled in Jessica Jacobson (Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Southern Door) for the 5-2 lead. Jacobson started the rally with a one-out double to left.

Earick (0-1) took the loss for the Storm, going the distance. She allowed one earned run and two walks on the day.

UWS held a 5-0 lead after three-and-a-half innings of game two. The 'Jackets sent nine to the plate in the top of the third inning and scored four runs. Bancroft-Hart singled up the middle to score Miller, who started the inning with a walk. Kirk then reached on an error in right field that allowed Bancroft-Hart and Tayler Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) to score for a 3-0 advantage. Then, Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) hit a sacrifice fly to right that plated Kirk for a 4-0 lead.

UWS added its fifth run in the fourth inning with consecutive two-out doubles from Bancroft-Hart and Kirk.
Up, 5-1, the 'Jackets put the game out of reach, scoring six more runs. The big blow in the frame was a bases-clearing, three-run triple from Kukowski to center field that made it a 10-1 game. Two batters prior, Kirk was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a five-run lead before Kaela Kraemer (Spring Green, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) singled up the middle for a 7-1 edge, setting the stage for the triple

Later in the inning, Horvath reached on an error by the left fielder with two out, scoring Kukowski from third.

Madill stuck out one and issued five walks. Abbie Carroll (0-2) started the second game in the circle for the Storm, lasting 2.1 innings. She gave up four runs (three earned) and four hits before giving way to Maddie Noble, who allowed seven runs on eight hits.

UWS is back at the Dundas Dome Saturday for a 6:30 p.m., doubleheader with Hamline.
