DULUTH, Minn. – St. Scholastica handed the UW-Superior volleyball team its first loss of the season with a four-set victory at Reif Gym Thursday.
The Saints came from behind to win the match after the Yellowjackets took the first set, 25-17. CSS won the final three, 25-15, 25-19 and 25-15, to stay unbeaten at 4-0 (4-0 UMAC). UWS falls to 5-1 (3-1 UMAC) with the loss.
Alexie Pryd (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove Senior) paced the 'Jackets with a match-high-tying 16 kills to go with 24 digs for her fourth consecutive double-double.
Cassy Teff (Foley, Minn./Foley) also posted a double-double of 13 kills and 20 digs, her third of the season.
Megan Holz (Savage, Minn./Burnsville) had the Yellowjackets' third double-double with 36 assists and 23 digs.
The match was tight statistically with the Saints leading, 57-56, in points and, 45-44, in kills. The teams were tied in aces, 4-4, blocks, 8-8, and assists, 44-44. UWS led in digs, 105-98.
Tied at 12-12 in the opening set, Superior won a pair of points on kills by Pryd and Teff for a 14-12 advantage. Following a St. Scholastica kill, Teff put down another kill and combined with
Kielan LaPlante (Chatfield, Minn./Chatfield) on a block to force a CSS timeout at 17-14.
Hailey Atwood (Big Lake, Minn./Big Lake) came out of the break with a service ace, and LaPlante added a kill from Holz to extend the lead to five. The teams traded points until the Saints called their second timeout of the set at 21-17. St. Scholastica pulled one closer on a UWS error, but the 'Jackets won the next four to take the set with the help of a service error,
Savanna Renderman (Altoona, Wis./Altoona) kill, LaPlante kill and Pryd ace.
UWS was up 9-5 in the second set, but could only muster six points the rest of the way as the Saints benefitted from 16 errors to tie the match.
Superior was up, 11-6, in the third set on a kill by Pryd prior to a 9-0 St. Scholastica run gave CSS a 15-11 advantage. Teff pulled UWS to within three at 18-15, but the Saints closed the set with three kills, the last two of which came from Jessica Remer.
St. Scholastica won the first five points of the fourth set, but Superior battled back to take the lead at 15-10 with the help of a Saints' error. From there, CSS regrouped for a five-point run and 18-17 edge. Following a UWS timeout, St. Scholastica cruised to the match win, earning seven of the final 10 points.
Remer led the Saints with 16 kills and Alcia Draper had 28 digs.
UWS stays on the road for Saturday;s matchup with Bethany Lutheran. First serve at North Gym is 3 p.m.
